If 45 is added to half a number, the result is triple the number. Find the number.

Solution

Let x be the number.

Then, half of the number is `x/2`.

According to the question,

`x/2 + 45 = 3x`

⇒ `(x + 90)/2 = 3x`

⇒ x + 90 = 6x

⇒ `x = 90/5 = 18`

Hence, the number is 18.
