Solution

  1. They possess high melting and boiling points.
  2. These solids do not conduct electricity because the ions are fixed in their lattice positions.
  3. They do conduct electricity in a molten state or when dissolved in water because the ions are free to move in the molten state or solution.
  4. Due to the presence of strong electrostatic forces of attraction, the ionic solids are hard. They are usually brittle.
  5. They have high heats of fusion. Their volatility is quite low.
  6. They are usually highly soluble in water and other polar solvents but almost insoluble in non-polar solvents (organic solvents).
  7. They typically exhibit high solubility in water and other polar solvents while demonstrating near insolubility in non-polar solvents (organic solvents).
  8. Despite the existence of ions, their ability to conduct electricity in the solid state remains notably limited. Nevertheless, they facilitate the conduction of electric current when in a fused state. They exhibit a limited capacity for conducting heat.
  9. They possess high densities.
