Question
How are the crystalline solids classified?
Advertisements
Solution
The types of the four main classes of crystalline solids:
- Ionic solids: Constituent particles are cations and anions. An examples are sodium chloride (NaCl), magnesium oxide (MgO), etc.
- Covalent network solids: Constituent particles are atoms. An examples are diamond, quartz (SiO2), silicon carbide (SiC), etc.
- Molecular solids: Constituent particles are monoatomic or polyatomic molecules. An examples are iodine (I2), dry ice (solid CO2), ice (solid H2O), etc.
- Metallic solids: Constituent particles are metallic ions in a sea of electrons. An examples are copper (Cu), iron (Fe), silver (Ag), etc.
