Solution
A rain shadow area is generally dry because it lies on the leeward side of a mountain range, where descending air loses its moisture.
When moist winds blow toward a mountain, they rise along the windward side, cool, and condense to form clouds and precipitation. By the time the air crosses over to the other side (the leeward side), it has already lost most of its moisture. As this dry air descends, it becomes warmer and even less likely to produce rain, creating dry conditions in the rain shadow region.
