Solution
Modems are divided into two types based on transmission methods:
- Asynchronous modems:
- In asynchronous modems, a transmission clock is not used; instead, bit synchronization is applied.
- Each data frame starts with a start bit that helps the receiver match the timing of the signal.
- Messages are short in length.
- It is used for sending character-based data.
- Asynchronous transmission is simple and low-cost, commonly used for PC-to-PC communication.
- Synchronous modems:
- Synchronous modems use clocks at both the sending and receiving ends.
- A special sync signal (bit pattern) is used that is easily detected by the receiver.
- Different types of data can be transmitted.
- Long sequences of bits can also be sent.
