Solution
Oxidation is a chemical process characterised by the gain of oxygen.
When magnesium metal is heated, it reacts with oxygen in the air to form magnesium oxide. In this reaction, magnesium (Mg) gains oxygen to become magnesium oxide (MgO).
\[\ce{2Mg + O2 -> 2MgO}\]
