The general electronic configuration of lanthanoids is [Xe]54 4f1−14 5d0−1 6s2, while the general electronic configuration of actinoids is [Rn]86 5f1−14 6d1−2 7s2. Hence, lanthanoids belong to the 4f series and actinoids belong to the 5f series.
