Solution

Widespread anger among soldiers, authorities, and the populace led to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The following explains the primary causes:

  1. Compared to British soldiers, Indian sepoys experienced discrimination in terms of compensation, advancement, and treatment. They did not receive higher levels and were paid less. Additionally, they were forced to serve abroad in violation of their religious beliefs. The introduction of Enfield rifle cartridges, which were thought to be polished with pig and cow fat, severely offended Muslim and Hindu sentiments and sparked an instant uprising.
  2. The Doctrine of Lapse, which allowed the British to acquire kingdoms without a natural heir, was one of their expansionist policies. Numerous kings lost their kingdoms and pensions, including Rani Lakshmibai and Nana Sahib. They became furious and joined the uprising as a result.
  3. Indian customs, religion, and culture were not respected by the British. Social reforms that were viewed as conflicting with Indian customs included the introduction of Western education and the elimination of Sati. Fear of being forced to convert to Christianity was another effect of missionary work.

Poverty and unemployment were caused by high taxes and the economic exploitation of artisans and peasants. British policies caused traditional businesses to fall. Indians were offended when the British disrespected Bahadur Shah Zafar, the Mughal emperor.
