Solution

The fakir put a spell on the paw to prove that fate rules people and that human beings cannot escape what is destined for them. The spell gave three people three wishes, but each would have reason to regret having them. The fakir may have hoped to teach people not to interfere with fate; however, the paw does not bring happiness or improve the world. Instead, it causes suffering and tragedy for those who use it. The first owner’s final wish was for death, Morris warns that the wishes bring misery, and the Whites lose their only son after wishing for money. The story therefore suggests that trying to control fate for personal gain can have terrible consequences. The fakir’s lesson may be meaningful, but the way he delivers it brings fear and grief rather than clear benefit.
