The following were the two main reasons for the movement against outsiders in Assam:
- The people of Assam thought that there were a lot of Bengali Muslims from Bangladesh living there and that unless they were sent back to Bangladesh, the native Assamese would be left in the minority.
- There were also problems with the economy, such as widespread poverty and unemployment. The people of Assam thought that their riches were being taken advantage of. So, the Anti-Foreigners Movement was against people coming to India illegally, Bengalis/outsiders taking over, and wrong voter registration lists.
