The following were the two main reasons for the movement against outsiders in Assam:

1. The people of Assam thought that there were a lot of Bengali Muslims from Bangladesh living there and that unless they were sent back to Bangladesh, the native Assamese would be left in the minority.
2. There were also problems with the economy, such as widespread poverty and unemployment. The people of Assam thought that their riches were being taken advantage of. So, the Anti-Foreigners Movement was against people coming to India illegally, Bengalis/outsiders taking over, and wrong voter registration lists.
