उत्तर
If v < u, i.e. if final velocity is less than initial velocity, the velocity decreases with time and the value of acceleration is negative. It is called negative acceleration. It is also called as retardation (or) deceleration.

Is it possible for an accelerating body to have constant speed?
A car accelerates to a velocity of 30 m/s in 10 s and then decelerates for 20 s so that it stops. Draw a velocity-time graph to represent the motion and find:

What is meant by negative acceleration?
A car is being driven at a speed of 20ms-1 when brakes are applied to bring it to rest in 5 s. The deceleration produced in this case will be ______.
Assertion: A positive acceleration of a body can be associated with the slowing down of the body.
Reason: Acceleration is a vector.
Assertion: Position-time graph of a stationary object is a straight line parallel to the time axis.
Reason: For a stationary object, the position does not change with time.
