The narrator & Lord Otori knew that there was someone outside so to be prepared & for their safety, they kept a sword & knife with them. Step by  step they were trying to follow the person outside with patience. The moment he entered inside Lord Otori took him in a stranglehold & the intruder wriggled backwards wherein the narrator leaped at him and all
three of them fall into the garden.
