Earwax, medically termed cerumen, is a waxy substance produced by glands in the outer auditory canal that traps dust, foreign particles, and microbes while lubricating the ear. Human ears possess an active self-cleaning mechanism where the skin lining the canal slowly migrates outward from the eardrum. Daily jaw movements, such as chewing and talking, facilitate this process by propelling the old wax along with trapped debris toward the ear opening, where it naturally dries, flakes, and falls out on its own.
