This condition is known as heterochromia (or heterochromia iridum). The coloration of the iris is determined by the concentration and distribution of the pigment melanin. Heterochromia occurs when there is an uneven amount or unequal production of melanin between the two irises or across parts of the same iris. It is most commonly congenital, arising from benign genetic variations during fetal ocular development, but it can also be acquired later in life due to eye trauma, inflammation, internal bleeding, or specific medications.
