Solution

A woman may give birth to twins, triplets, or more babies in a single pregnancy due to the following reasons:

  1. Multiple ovulation (Hyperovulation): Two or more eggs are released during the same menstrual cycle. If each egg is fertilized by a different sperm, multiple babies develop. This is the most common cause of fraternal twins and higher-order multiples.
  2. Splitting of a fertilized egg: Sometimes, a single fertilized egg splits into two or more embryos, resulting in identical twins or, rarely, identical triplets.
  3. Fertility treatments: Fertility medicines that stimulate ovulation and assisted reproductive techniques such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) increase the chances of multiple pregnancies, especially if more than one embryo is transferred.
  4. Maternal age: Women aged 35 years or older are more likely to release more than one egg during ovulation, increasing the chance of multiple births.
  5. Heredity (Family history): A family history of fraternal twins, particularly on the mother's side, can increase the likelihood of releasing multiple eggs and having multiple babies.
  6. Previous multiple pregnancy: Women who have previously had twins or other multiple births have a slightly higher chance of having another multiple pregnancy.
