उत्तर
A woman may give birth to twins, triplets, or more babies in a single pregnancy due to the following reasons:
- Multiple ovulation (Hyperovulation): Two or more eggs are released during the same menstrual cycle. If each egg is fertilized by a different sperm, multiple babies develop. This is the most common cause of fraternal twins and higher-order multiples.
- Splitting of a fertilized egg: Sometimes, a single fertilized egg splits into two or more embryos, resulting in identical twins or, rarely, identical triplets.
- Fertility treatments: Fertility medicines that stimulate ovulation and assisted reproductive techniques such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) increase the chances of multiple pregnancies, especially if more than one embryo is transferred.
- Maternal age: Women aged 35 years or older are more likely to release more than one egg during ovulation, increasing the chance of multiple births.
- Heredity (Family history): A family history of fraternal twins, particularly on the mother's side, can increase the likelihood of releasing multiple eggs and having multiple babies.
- Previous multiple pregnancy: Women who have previously had twins or other multiple births have a slightly higher chance of having another multiple pregnancy.
