The Cauvery River is one of the major rivers of India, and it is the third-largest river in the country by discharge. It flows for about 765 km. The river passes through important towns like Thiruchirapalli, Tanjavur, Srirangapatnam, and Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Two notable dams constructed across the Cauvery in Tamil Nadu are the Mettur Dam and the Kallanai Dam, which help in irrigation and flood control.
