  • Profiles help to visually represent the shape of the terrain and are useful in geographical studies, engineering, road construction, and planning.
  • They are commonly constructed using contour maps and are of two types:
    • Cross profile (across a specific feature) and 
    • Longitudinal profile (along the length of a river or slope).
