Solution

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium called Treponema pallidum. The disease progresses through three distinct stages, each with varying symptoms. In the first stage, a painless, clean-based indurated ulcer appears at the site of infection, such as the glans of the penis, rectum, lips, tongue, or nipples; this ulcer typically heals within 2 to 4 weeks. The second stage occurs 1 to 12 months after the primary ulcer heals and involves a widespread skin rash appearing all over the body and inside the mouth, often accompanied by fever; the rash does not itch and usually disappears within a week or two, but at this point, the person is highly infectious. The third stage follows a latent symptom-free period lasting one to several years, during which the bacteria can reactivate and cause serious damage to various organs, including slow-growing abscesses and disorders affecting the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. Syphilis is transmitted primarily through sexual intercourse or close physical contact, including kissing. Prevention involves avoiding promiscuity and using condoms, while treatment includes antibiotic therapy such as penicillin or alternatives like erythromycin, tetracycline, and doxycycline. Testing and treating sexual contacts are crucial to prevent reinfection and control spread, and prenatal screening is important to prevent congenital syphilis.
