Solution
Water undergoes slight ionisation by itself to form hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. The reaction is:
\[\ce{H2O <=> H^+ + OH^-}\]
Thus, pure water contains a very small amount of H+ ions and OH− ions. The concentrations of these ions are equal in pure water.
