Population Distribution and Density in Maharashtra

Mumbai, June 17: As part of an academic geography assignment, a study was conducted to analyse the distribution and density of the population across Maharashtra. Maharashtra is the second most populous state in India, with a population of nearly 11.24 crore. This report provides simple insights into how physical features and economic factors drive demographic shifts across the state.

The distribution of the population in Maharashtra is highly uneven due to industrialisation and topography. The western coastal belt, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune, and Thane, holds the highest concentration of the state’s population. This region thrives due to rapid urbanisation and massive job opportunities. In contrast, the eastern parts of Vidarbha and the rugged hilly areas of the Western Ghats show a very sparse population distribution due to dense forest cover and limited industrial development.

In terms of demographic density, Maharashtra records a state-wide average of 365 persons per square kilometre, but the internal contrast is extreme. Mumbai Suburban district has the highest population density, at 20,980 persons per square kilometre, due to severe land constraints and commercial centralisation. At the opposite end, the heavily forested district of Gadchiroli records the lowest density, at just 74 persons per square kilometre, highlighting how physical geography constrains large human settlements.

This structural study makes it evident that economic opportunities and physical terrain directly shape the state’s demographic landscape. Overall, analysing this population contrast between hyper-urbanised hubs and rural forest districts was a highly educational and insightful experience for understanding human geography.
