Why is there less pollution by natural gas power plants?

Natural gas power plants produce less pollution primarily because natural gas is a cleaner-burning fossil fuel that consists mostly of methane. When combusted, it produces significantly lower emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO₂) and nitrogen oxides (NO_x) compared to coal or oil, and it emits virtually zero mercury and particulate matter. Additionally, natural gas has a simpler chemical structure with a higher hydrogen-to-carbon ratio, resulting in lower carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions per unit of energy generated. When integrated into advanced combined-cycle configurations, their high efficiency further reduces fuel consumption and overall emissions per megawatt-hour of electricity produced.
