Solution
A spoon acts as a lever when used to pry open a lid. The edge of the container acts as the fulcrum, the lid is the load, and the force applied to the handle is the effort. The handle gives a longer effort arm, so a small effort can produce a larger force on the lid. A finger does not provide this lever action, so opening the lid with it is harder.
