Short Answer

Solution

If cells had not undergone meiosis, haploid gametes (n) would not be formed. Instead, the gametes would remain diploid (2n). After fertilisation, the zygote would have twice the normal number of chromosomes (4n), and the chromosome number would continue to increase in each generation, disrupting the species' normal chromosome number.
