A deficiency of haemoglobin in the human body directly results in anaemia, which significantly reduces the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity. Because haemoglobin is the vital iron-rich protein in red blood cells responsible for binding and transporting oxygen from the lungs to all body tissues, its shortage starves the cells of the oxygen required for cellular respiration and energy production.
