Question
What would be result when 600 g of iron clips (SHC = 0.48 Jg−1°C−1) at 600°C are placed in 800 g of ice at 0°C? [SLH of ice = 336 Jg−1]

Solution
Assuming the temperature of iron clips becomes 0°C.
Heat given out by the iron clips Q = mcθf
= 600 g × 0.48 J g−1°C−1 × 600°C
= 172800 J
Assuming all the ice melts to form water at 0°С
Heat absorbed by ice Q1 = mL
= 800 g × 336 Jg−1
= 268800 J
As the heat supplied by iron Q (172800 J) is not sufficient to melt all ice (268800 J), therefore, some amount of remains unmelted.
Let 'm' be the mass of ice which melts by heat supplied by iron
Then, Q = mL
⇒ 172800 = m × 336 Jg−1
\[m=\frac{172800}{336} \mathrm{~g}\]
∴ m = 514.6 g
In the end of experiment mass of unmelted ice is (600 – 514.6 = 85.4 g) and final temperature is zero degree celsius.
