The Marathas had a well-organised system of administration. Shivaji ensured that officials were honest, removed unfair practices, and strengthened forts for defence. He appointed eight ministers to assist in governing the kingdom and worked for the welfare of people of all religions. Officials were regularly transferred to prevent them from becoming too powerful or exploiting the people. Shivaji also provided pensions and military jobs to the families of soldiers who died in battle.
