Solution
Merging cells is a formatting feature in Excel that combines two or more selected adjacent cells into a single, larger macro-cell. Once merged, this new unified cell takes the cell reference or coordinate of the top-left cell of the original selection. If multiple cells contain data before being merged, Excel will keep only the text or value from the upper-left cell and permanently clear the contents of all the other combined cells. In computerised accounting, this tool is most commonly paired with the “Centre” alignment command to create clean, professional main headings, subtitles, or corporate titles (such as “Balance Sheet as of March 31, 2026”) that span neatly across the entire width of a financial statement or data table.
