Solution

A discovery is the identification or finding of something that already existed but that nobody knew about earlier. e.g., discovery of the structure of an atom. An invention, on the other hand, is creating something totally new that never existed before, using one’s own ideas and based on a thorough study of existing knowledge. e.g., Edison's invention of the light bulb.
