What is the difference between a discovery and an invention?

A discovery is identifying or finding out something that already existed, but which nobody knew about earlier.
e.g. Discovery of the structure of an atom
An invention, on the other hand, is creating something totally new that never existed before, using one’s own ideas and based on a thorough study of existing knowledge. e.g. Invention of the light bulb by Edison
