Solution

NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. In 1949, the United States, Canada, and a number of Western European countries joined this military alliance. Given that collective defence is its primary goal, any attack on one member is considered an attack on all. To foster peace and stability in the North Atlantic region and combat the threat of Soviet expansion during the Cold War, NATO was established.
