Solution 1
When a ligand attaches to the metal ion to form a ring, the metal-ligand association is found to be more stable. In other words, we can say that complexes containing chelate rings are more stable than complexes without rings. This is known as the chelate effect.
Solution 2
When a didentate or a polydentate ligand contains donor atoms positioned in such a way that when they coordinate with the central metal ion, a five or a six membered ring is formed, the effect is called chelate effect.
