Solution

  1. The United States and the Soviet Union were on the verge of nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
  2. The Cuban Missile Crisis marked a pivotal moment in the Cold War. When the U.S. found Soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba, which is only 90 miles from its coast, it put up a naval blockade and told the Soviets to take them down.
  3. The situation showed how dangerous a nuclear war could be and caused a shift towards more cautious diplomacy.
  4. Because of this, a “Hot Line” was set up between Washington and Moscow so that they could talk to each other directly.
  5. Later, both countries signed agreements like the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. After the crisis, there was a need for better crisis management. The crisis also marked the start of détente, a more controlled part of the Cold War.
