Solution

Adding ammonium hydroxide drop by drop to zinc sulphate solution forms a white gelatinous precipitate of zinc hydroxide.

\[\ce{\underset{\text{Colourless}}{ZnSO4} + 2NH4OH ->\underset{\text{White, gelatinous ppt.}}{Zn(OH)2\downarrow} + \underset{\text{colourless}}{(NH4)2SO4}}\]

Adding excess ammonium hydroxide dissolves the precipitate to form a clear, colourless complex solution.

\[\ce{\underset{Excess}{Zn(OH)2} + 4NH4OH -> \underset{(Colourless solution)}{\underset{Tetra-ammine zinc (II) hydroxide}{[Zn(NH3)4](OH)2}} + 4H2O}\]
