The baton must be passed within the 20-metre exchange zone. In the 4 × 100 m relay, runners remain in their lanes throughout. In the 4 × 400 m relay, runners stay in their lanes until the runner of the second leg passes the first bend. Avoid obstructing other runners. Practise passing and receiving the baton smoothly while running.
