Question

What is the angle of dip at a place where the horizontal and vertical components of the Earth’s magnetic field are equal?

Solution

The angle of dip is given as

`S = tan^-1  ((B_v)/(B_H))`

BV = vertical component of earth’s magnetic field.

BH = horizontal component of earth’s magnetic field.

So, as BV = BH, then

S = tan−1 (1)

Or the angle of dip will be, S = 45°
