Step 1: Multiply each term in the first bracket by each term in the second bracket
= a(a + 2) − 8(a + 2)
Step 2: Simplify each multiplication
= (a2 + 2a) − (8a + 16)
Step 3: Combine like terms
= a2 + 2a − 8a − 16
= a2 − 6a − 16
