Solution
Let the number be x.
Then, two-third of this number = `2/3x` and one-third of this number = `1/3x`.
According to the question,
`2/3 x = 1/3 x + 3`
⇒ `2/3x - 1/3 x = 3`
⇒ `(2x - x)/3 = 3` ...[Taking LCM on LHS]
⇒ `x/3 = 3`
⇒ `x/3 xx 3 = 3 xx 3` ...[Multiplying both sides by 3]
⇒ x = 9
Hence, the required number is 9.
