Question

The weights of 5 children in a group (in kg) are 25, 35, 35, 28 and 32. Find their mean weight and median weight. After a year it was found that they all gained 3 kg each. Find the new mean weight.

Solution

Sum of all the weights = 25 + 35 + 35 + 28 + 32 = 155

Number of children = 5

Mean = `"Sum of all weight"/"Number of children"`

= `155/5`

= 31

Arranging the numbers in ascending order = 25, 28, 32, 35, 35

n = 5 observations

Median = `(n + 1)/2`

= `(5 +1)/2`

= 3rd

Median = 32

If each child gained 3 kg, the new weights are:

25 + 3 = 28, 35 + 3 = 38, 35 + 3 = 38, 28 + 3 = 31, 32 + 3 = 35

New Weights = 28, 38, 38, 31, 35

Sum of the new weights = 28 + 38 + 38 + 31 + 35 = 170

New Mean = `"Sum of New weights"/"Number of Children"`

= `170/5`

= 34
