The volume of 50 g of a substance is 20 cm3. If the density of water is 1 g cm−3, will the substance float or sink?

Solution

The volume of the substance = 20 cm3

Mass of the substance = 50 g

Since density = `"mass"/"volume"`

∴ Density = `(50  g)/(20  cm^3) `

= 2.5 g/cm-3

Therefore, the density of the given substance = 2.5 g/cm-3

The substance will sink in water because the density of the substance is greater than the density of water, i.e. 1 gcm−3.
