Solution
Debate: The TV is described as an ‘idiot box’ - Against the Motion
Good morning to all. Today, I stand before you to oppose the motion that television is an ‘idiot box’. I strongly believe that television is not merely a source of entertainment but also an important medium of education, information and awareness.
First of all, television provides knowledge and helps us learn about the world around us. Educational programmes, documentaries and news channels increase our understanding of science, history, culture and current affairs. Students can use television as a useful learning resource.
Secondly, television connects people across the world. It brings important events, achievements and discoveries directly into our homes. It also promotes awareness about social issues, health, environment and national development.
My worthy opponent may have pointed out that television wastes time and can create addiction, but I feel that the problem is not television itself; it depends on how wisely we use it. Just like any other technology, television has both advantages and disadvantages. Proper selection of programmes and limited viewing time can make it beneficial.
Friends, don’t you agree with me when I say that a medium which educates, informs and entertains millions of people cannot simply be called an ‘idiot box’?
Although my opponent may feel that television has negative effects, we must remember that responsible use can turn it into a powerful tool for learning and development.
To sum up, I would say that television is not an ‘idiot box’. It is a window to the world that provides knowledge, awareness and entertainment when used in the right manner.
Thank you.
