Solution

Here, let the two numbers be:

Smaller number = x

Greater number = 48 − x (since the difference is 48)

According to the second condition:

5x = 3(48 − x)

5x = 144 − 3x

5x + 3x = 144

8x = 144

x = `144/8`

∴ x = 18

So, the smaller number is 18, and the greater number is 48 − 18 = 30,

Hence, the numbers are 18 and 30.
