The scale of a map is 1 : 200000. A plot of land of area 20km2 is to be represented on the map. Find: The area in km2 that can be represented by 1 cm2

Solution

Scale of map =1 : 200000

For area,

Area scale = (1 : 200000)2 = 1 : (200000)2 = 1 : 40000000000

So,

1 cm2 on map = 40000000000 cm2 on ground

Convert to km2:

1 km2 = (100000 cm)2 = 1010 cm2

440000000000 ÷ 1010 = 4

1 cm2 represents 4 km2
