Solution

The mean weight of 5 students is 47 kg.

Total weight of all students = mean × number of students

= 47 × 5

= 235 kg

Total weight of the first 4 students are:

44 + 45 + 47 + 49 = 185 kg

Weight of the fifth student = Total weight of all students − Total weight of the first 4 students

= 235 − 185

= 50 kg

∴ The weight of the fifth student is 50 kg.
