Question
The length of a rectangle is 16 cm and its perimeter is equal to the perimeter of a square with side 12.5 cm. Find the area of the rectangle.

Solution
Length of the rectangle = 16 cm
Let its breadth be x cm
Perimeter = 2 (16 + x) = 32 + 2x
Also perimeter = 4(12.5) = 50 cm.
According to statement,
32 + 2x = 50
=> 2x = 50 – 32 = 18
=> x = 9
Breadth of the rectangle = 9 cm.
Area of the rectangle (l x b)= 16 x 9 = 144 cm2
