Solution

The growth of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is not a real indicator of economic welfare for the following two reasons:

  1. Unequal distribution of income: An increase in GDP or national income may not imply an improved standard of living for the majority of the population because the income generated may be distributed very unequally among different sections of society. Therefore, even if GDP rises, the benefits may accrue largely to a small rich minority, leaving the majority without significant improvement in their welfare. Thus, GDP growth does not reflect economic welfare unless accompanied by equitable distribution of income.
  2. Ignoring social and environmental costs: The growth in GDP does not account for the increasing social costs or negative externalities such as environmental pollution, deforestation, and urban overcrowding that may accompany industrialization and economic growth. If GDP increases at the cost of ecological balance and the quality of life deteriorates due to pollution and other harmful effects, then this growth does not translate into real economic welfare. GDP purely measures economic activity without valuing these costs.
