Solution

Given:

12x2 − 11x + 2 = 0

a = 12, b = −11, c = 2

a × c

= 12 × 2

= 24

Find two numbers whose product = 24 and sum = −11.

These numbers are:

−8 and −3

12x2 − 8x − 3x + 2 = 0

(12x2 − 8x) − (3x − 2) = 0

4x(3x − 2) − 1(3x − 2) = 0

(3x − 2) (4x − 1) = 0

3x − 2 = 0

⇒ x = `2/3`

4x − 1 = 0

⇒ x = `1/4`

`x = 2/3 or x = 1/4`
