Enzymes are the biochemical molecules, capable of catalysing reactions. Over 300 enzymes are being used in industries and pharmaceuticals produced by a wide variety of microbes, mostly fungi. Amylases are obtained from fungiAspergillus, Rhizopus and some species of Bacillus (bacteria). They are capable of degrading starch and are used for the production of alcoholic beverages, in textile industries, confectioneries and paper industry. Lipases, the fatdigesting enzymes, are obtained from Penicillium, Rhizopus and Candida are used in detergent fermentations and for removing oily stains from the laundry. Proteases obtained from Aspergillus niger and Bacillus species degrade proteins and polypeptides. Pectinases are used to clear bottled fruit juices. Streptokinase, produced by bacteria, Streptococcus and modified by genetic engineering is used as a 'clots buster' for removing clots from the blood vessels of the patients. Some microbes help in the production of bioactive molecules like Cyclosporin A, produced by fungi, Trichoderma polysporum. It is used as an immunosuppressive agent in organ-transplant patients by inhibiting the activation of T cells. |
