Question

Read the following poem and write an appreciation of it with the help of the given points in paragraph format.

A Thing of Beauty is a Joy For Ever
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health and quiet breathing.
Therefore, on every morrow, are we wreathing
A flowery band to bind us to the earth,
Spite of despondence, of the inhuman dearth
Of noble natures, of the gloomy days,
Of all the unhealthy and o’er-darkened ways
Made for our searching: yes, in spite of all,
Some shape of beauty moves a way the pall
From our dark spirits. Such the sun, the moon,
Trees old, and young, sprouting a shady boon
For simple sheep; and such are daffodils
With the green world they live in; and clear rills
That for themselves a cooling covert make
‘Gainst the hot season; the mid forest brake,
Rich with a sprinkling of fair musk-rose blooms:
And such too is the grandeur of the dooms
We have imagined for the mighty dead;
All lovely tales that we have heard or read:
An endless fountain of immortal drink
Pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink.
Nor do we merely feel these essences
For one short hour; no, even as the trees
That whisper round a temple become soon
Dear as the temple’s self, so does the moon,
The passion poesy, glories infinite,
Haunt us till they become a cheering light
Unto our souls, and bound to us so fast,
That, whether there be shine, or gloom o’ercast
They always must be with us, or we die.
- John Keats

Appreciation of the Poem – A Thing of Beauty is a Joy For Ever

The poem "A Thing of Beauty is a Joy For Ever" is written by the famous Romantic poet John Keats. It celebrates the everlasting impact of beauty on the human spirit. The central theme of the poem is that true beauty never fades; it continues to provide peace, joy, and inspiration throughout our lives. The poet emphasizes that, despite life's hardships and darkness, beautiful things in nature and art uplift our souls and give us hope.

The rhyme scheme of the poem is aa, bb, cc..., following the style of heroic couplets.

The poem uses several figures of speech such as:

  • Alliteration: "cooling covert", "simple sheep"
  • Metaphor: "an endless fountain of immortal drink" refers to the eternal beauty and joy
  • Personification: "trees that whisper", "dark spirits"

This is a lyrical and descriptive poem, rich in imagery. The poet paints vivid pictures of nature—sun, moon, daffodils, trees, and streams—which soothe and nourish our tired minds. There is also a deeper, implied meaning: that beauty exists not just in nature, but also in stories, poetry, and memories of great people, and it offers emotional and spiritual refuge.

Favourite lines are:

"A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness..."

I like this poem very much because it brings a sense of peace and calm. It reminds us that in a world full of pain and struggle, beauty—whether in nature or in human creativity—provides lasting comfort and joy.
